I have omitted the glaze I usually put on top in order to keep the recipe lower in calories. If you like (as I do) you can pour the following mixture on top before baking. It gives the meatloaf a nice flavor and helps keep in moisture.

Glaze Mix

· ½ cup catsup

· 2 T mustard

· 2 T honey

· ½ tsp liquid smoke

Mix the ingredients together and spread across top of meatloaf before baking. It tastes great!

Helpful hints for frugal domestic gods and goddesses:

Don’t throw out any leftover turkey meatloaf. It makes a great meat for chili or spaghetti sauce the next day. You may have a problem having any leftovers to use. It makes great sandwiches also!

A Little Meatloaf History

Meatloaf is an entrée with ancient roots. The citizens of ancient Rome enjoyed a dish similar to meatloaf and the Germans, Belgians and Dutch made it a standard menu item. People in Austria and Germany often cooked meatloaf wrapped in bacon and put boiled eggs inside it.

Meatloaf became a popular dinner entrée in America during the Great Depression and World War II years. You could feed more people with less meat and still serve an appetizing meal by using fillers like bread crumbs or corn flakes to stretch the recipe.

The tasty meatloaf your grandma and mom served is a lot more expensive to make nowadays. The price of ground beef keeps going up and the fat content of beef makes meatloaf less attractive as an entrée. Turkey meatloaf tastes great and costs much less to make.
